Mahendra Singh Dhoni is an Indian cricketer and currently the captain of Chennai Super Kings. Popularly known as Mahi, he is considered one of the greatest cricketer’s of all times. For India, he is the best captain that the Indian team has ever got.  His story was inspiring to many, however there is more to it.

Captain Cool has been at the center of controversies many times. Let’s take a look at some of the controversies.

Spot-Fixing Scandal

In 2013, the biggest IPL match fixing scandal surfaced. At that time, it was the biggest controversies in India. Dhoni was the captain during the time. In a docudrama that aired on Hotstar, Dhoni said, “2013 was the most difficult phase in my life, I was never depressed as much as I was then.2013 was the most difficult phase in my life, I was never depressed as much as I was then.”

However, at the time of the scandal, Dhoni did not speak about it for several months. His silence was interpreted in may different ways. Even in the court hearings, he was heavily questioned. One of the prosecution lawyers accused him for not being honest.

Sacrificed a goat to celebrate

After winning the T20 World Cup in South Africa, on 10th March 2008, Mahendra Singh Dhoni sacrificed a goat in a Ranchi temple. Subsequently, he faced the rage of several animal control groups People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) issued a letter to him for “cruelty to animals”. In the letter, they wrote, “As a talented athlete, you are a role model for young people. We hope that you will consider the enormous influence you have over the children and in the future refrain from cruel acts that your young fans might be inspired to imitate.”

Seniors Exclusion Due to ‘Policies’

In 2007, M.S. Dhoni  was made Captain of the Indian Cricket Team. From that time, there have been a rift among the team mates. Virendra Sehwag was the vice-captain, and rumors were rife that there had been a dispute among them.  However, Dhoni shut the rumors saying, “Recent reports in the Indian media of a rift between myself and Sehwag amounts to nothing but false and irresponsible media reporting.

He introduced an unusual ‘Rotation Policy’ to the team. Dhoni stated that this policy would assist every member to be fit and able to score runs.

However, Dhoni also said that he cant play Sachin, Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir in the same team as they are slow on the field. Few months later, Sachin retired. Due to poor form, Sehwag and Gambhir were dropped. Also, it was alleged that Dhoni was the reason behind Ganguly and Dravid’s exclusion from the ODI team.
