After the FBI identified Donald Trump’s shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a flood of information and misinformation emerged, but more questions remained unanswered even 36 hours after the assassination attempt. Crooks acted alone, shooting at Trump with his father’s AR-15-style firearm at a Pennsylvania rally. The rounds grazed Trump’s ear, and Crooks was fatally shot.

The 20-year-old’s family history and upbringing revealed nothing that could be linked to the assassination attempt. Crooks was, however, registered as a Republican. However, he also contributed $15 to a Democratic project.

How did the Secret Service security breach occur?

Crooks fired shots at Trump from roughly 150 yards away from a rooftop. According to reports, many who attended the demonstration reported strange activity on the rooftop, although it is unclear why the Secret Service did not secure the area.

Was Donald Trump the sole target?

The handgun belonged to Crooks’ father, and he was a lone wolf attacker, but it is unclear what else the gunman planned. Authorities reported detecting explosives, including an IED, or improvised explosive device, inside Crooks’ car near the Trump event. Crooks’ residence also had bomb-making ingredients, according to the Associated Press.

Surviving the shooting, Donald Trump emerged as defiant, with notable individuals openly announcing their support for the Republican candidate (presumed). Trump reportedly rewrote his speech for the RNC convention, where he would be officially named the Republican candidate. According to Axios, Trump will offer a unique address aimed just at Biden.
