The series went well, and the season 8 finale wrapped up most of its unsolved plots well in an epic episode that featured the deaths of some important characters and happy endings. Star Ian Somerhalder has repeatedly said that the chapter of his career on The Vampire Diaries is closed. And since Nina Dobrev already left the series in season 6 and only returned for the end. It seems unlikely that she is interested in filming Season 9 of The Vampire Diaries.
Kevin Williamson went ahead with the Tell Me A Story series. While Julie Plec is currently working on the Vampire Diaries spin-off in New Mexico. So it doesn’t seem like another season fits into his schedule either.

The Vampire Diaries may be over and its first spinoff, The Originals, unfortunately, followed. However, the other derivatives of Legacies are still on the air.
