The second season of Virgin River was an emotional roller coaster for Hope and Doc Mullins. Hope ended up having a mild heart attack, which changed her outlook on life and she was afraid of death.

Doc was confused as to why he wanted a divorce after so long and admitted that the heart attack had made him consider how he would spend the rest of his life at Virgin River.

The couple ended up fighting again over the divorce plans, but eventually, Doc presented Hope with the Virgin River divorce papers and told her that all she had to do was sign them.

Towards the end of the season, Doc had Hope’s engagement ring reset and presented it to her, proposing a second time. Plans for the wedding reception were in full swing at Virgin River when Hope wanted to say something to Doc.

Hope asked him if he’d gone for a checkup and he put his hand on her arm. She said Doc was starting to scare her, but before she had time to explain herself, the door to her house slammed open and a group of Virgin River residents appeared.

Both Hope and Doc looked puzzled, but they managed to put on a brave face for their guests, and Virgin River fans have been wondering what Doc was about to say.

The most obvious Virgin River theory is that he has been diagnosed with some kind of disease or condition, which would leave his colleague Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) directing the surgery full time.

There is a suggestion that Doc being told at his appointment will have a huge impact on his ability to work as a primary physician. There’s a chance he could hand over his surgery to Mel, which would be a huge step in the Virgin River star’s career.
