We all know about the popularity of UPI (Unified Payments Interface) in India due to its ease of use and speed. But, recently, a fake message has been circulating on WhatsApp. It states that starting April 1, UPI transactions will be chargeable. That means customers will have to pay a fee for online transactions.
But National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) has dismissed this rumor by issuing a statement via its official Twitter handle. The statement clarifies that UPI transactions are still free for customers. The message further explained that the interchange charges apply only to transactions made through Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPIs). Examples of PPIs are wallets and credit cards. The interchange fee for such transactions is 1.1%.
According to the NPCI’s statement, there are no charges for bank account to bank account Unified Payments Interface payments. This means that payments made through your bank account are free of cost. The NPCI further added that this additional feature to UPI enables customers to choose any bank account, Rupay Credit card, or prepaid wallet on UPI-enabled apps.
The NPCI emphasized that UPI is a free, fast, secure, and seamless digital payment platform. In fact, over 8 billion transactions are processed free of cost every month for customers and merchants using bank accounts. Therefore, customers should not fall prey to any fake messages or rumors circulating on social media.
Customers should always stay alert and not believe in fake messages related to online transactions. The NPCI is a committed body that provides an easy, secure, and reliable digital payment platform to its users. This NPCI statement has brought a sigh of relief to the customers. So, customers can continue to enjoy the benefits of UPI transactions without any worries.
