‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ is shaping up to do to the Asgardian God of Thunder what ‘Captain America: Civil War’ did to everyone’s favorite thawed war veteran. Last month it was reported that the fourth Thor solo movie was going to have an “Avengers 5 feel” due to its expansive cast, featuring crossovers from the MCU that could rival Cap vs Iron Man’s battle from ‘Civil War’.
We know very little about the plot beyond Natalie Portman’s return, so we still don’t know if ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ will end up feeling more like an Avengers movie than a Thor movie. However, we’ve decided to do some research on the announced and rumored cast to recap which MCU characters could join Thor on his latest adventure.
So far we know for sure that Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor (obviously) and reunite with Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, who is now officially the MCU’s first openly LGBTQ + superhero. Having skipped ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and the ‘Avengers’ movies (barring some stock footage in ‘Avengers: Endgame’), Natalie Portman will be back as Jane Foster, but she is no longer an ordinary Jane, she’s Mighty Thor.
Despite the return of Jane Foster, it doesn’t seem like we’ll ever see Stellan Skarsgård or Kat Dennings as Dr. Erik Selvig and Darcy Lewis, respectively. Both stars have questioned her appearance in the next movie, but maybe they’re just being low-key.
The only other character (still alive) we would expect to see back is Korg, with Taika Waititi reprising his fan-favorite role. Jaimie Alexander’s Lady Sif managed to escape the Warriors Three massacre at the hands of Hela in the last film, but only because Alexander was unable to appear in the film. That opens up the possibility for Lady Sif to return.
At the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, Thor decided to leave New Asgard and go into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy, so it is not a surprise to learn that some of them will appear in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’.
Vin Diesel confirmed it earlier this year, but it is not yet clear exactly which Guardians will appear. Chris Pratt will definitely appear as Star-Lord, but the role he will play in the film is still unclear. Star-Lord’s appearance suggests we could also see Karen Gillan’s Nebula, Dave Bautista’s Drax, and Pom Klementieff’s Mantis, as well as Diesel and Bradley Cooper re-voicing Groot and Rocket, respectively.
They were all aboard the Benatar at the end of ‘Endgame,’ so it would make sense for everyone to show up. That, unless Pratt only appears in a cameo where Star-Lord finally manages to get Thor out of his ship.
After the events of ‘Endgame’, unfortunately, there aren’t many Avengers left to join Thor on his next adventure. The appearance of Mark Ruffalo after the Hulk and Thor struck up a close bond in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ cannot be ruled out, but the events of ‘Endgame’ have left the Hulk permanently damaged, so he may be no longer in the superhero game.
