For lovers of Mindhunter, it is hard to imagine that this hit Netflix series does not have a third season lined up. After seasons 1 and 2, the psychological thriller secured a large (and still climbing ) fanbase when hitting notably substantial marks with critics. So why wouldn’t it be a promise that the series goes on?

Forbes has called Mindhunter” easily among the best shot, best written, best-acted shows on Netflix” and stated the series has”a level of quality that they should be dying to hold on to.” And that sounds about right. Popularity aside, the fate of Mindhunter season 3 remains undetermined, it seems. Here’s what we know up to now.

Is Mindhunter Season 3 Happening?

In the looks of this, Mindhunter season 3 probably is not occurring at all, let alone in 2021. At the conclusion of the day, however, it’s a never-say-never situation for this one. As we previously reported, production for Mindhunter season 3 was put on an “indefinite hold” before this year. However, all hope to get a third season is not lost just yet. Yes, executive producer David Fincher has all but abandoned it after only two seasons, but there’s a slight glimmer of hope for it to return at a certain stage in the future.

When it comes to the plot of Mindhunter, there is definitely room for more seasons and much more serial killers to examine. Perhaps people behind the scenes aren’t certain where they need that story to go yet.

David Fincher advised Variety in November 2020:

I certainly needed some time away, we’d all hands on deck to complete Mindhunter Season 2 and also we didn’t have a ton of scripts along with a ton of outlines and a bible standing by for 3. I’ll admit I was a bit like I really don’t know that I am ready to spend seasoned 2 years at the crawl space.’

While Fincher’s announcement on Mindhunter season 3 cast doubt on it happening, it also did not seem like a flat-out affirmation that the show is done for good. At least, that’s not how I’m carrying it. It could very well be a matter of timing. In the same interview, he called Mindhunter season 2″ a jolt to produce.” Fincher also mentioned that the hit series wasn’t an inexpensive series to create. So given a little more time, break following a nightmarish next season, and the necessary resources, maybe Netflix will move forward to the third season when we are least expecting it.

For the time being, however, it seems like we’re in for a protracted wait, even if and when a third season ever comes to be. So stay tuned for updates, but do not hold your breath to get a Mindhunter season 3, buddies. Especially not this season.
