Taylor Swift won the VMAs in 2023, becoming the first woman to do so. Video of the Year is crowned. Taylor Swift dominated the MTV Video Music Honors 2023 on Tuesday night. Winning nine of the prestigious Moon Person honors, including Video, Song, and Artist of the Year.
The 33-year-old starlet walked the stage at New Jersey’s Prudential Center all night to accept her accolades for the hit song “Anti-Hero.” She also won Best Pop and Best Direction, as well as Best Cinematography. Along with best Visual Effects, Show of the Summer, and Album of the Year for “Midnights.”
She praised her crew several times, inviting them onstage to share the spotlight with her. She also mentioned her longtime songwriting partner Jack Antonoff, who was not present. The “Karma” singer became the first person in history to win Video of the Year four times, having previously won for “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Bad Blood,” and “You Need to Calm Down“.
Swift’s presence at the VMAs comes just weeks after she alluded to Kanye West’s controversial 2009 interruption of her award-winning speech for Best Female Video for “You Belong With Me“. During the “Evermore” set of her fourth Eras Tour event at Mexico City’s Foro Sol stadium on Aug. 27, the “Cruel Summer” singer aimed at the rapper, 46.
“It’s the best way to be interrupted, by the way, just people chanting your name,” Swift said as her voice was suddenly drowned out by loud clapping and ear-shattering shouts from the audience. “It’s the only way to be interrupted,” she explains. “And I would know.”
During the controversial moment in 2009, West took Swift’s microphone and declared that Beyoncé should have won the award instead. “Yo, Taylor, I’m so happy for you, I’m going to let you finish.” But Beyoncé had one of the best music videos ever!” West stated during the release of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” video. Later in the evening, after Beyoncé won, she called Swift onstage to “have her moment.”
Since then, Swift has had numerous VMA moments – and wins. She has a total of 14 Moon Person statuettes, following only Madonna, who has 20. Swift has a chance to beat out the Queen of Pop if she wins at least six of her eight categories tonight.
