Obesity in Children is rising at alarming rate in this Pandemic

Obesity is the condition when body accumulates excess amount of fats . And it can be very harmful to the body and also lead to many different health problems. A body mass index (BMI)  of 30 or higher is an indicator of obesity .

Health of kids and adult is at risk due to stay at home policy. With an increase in cases of Covid 19 people have been staying at home for over an year now. Schools, playground, offices has been closed as a result of which there is literally no physical activity that has been done over a past month.

Obesity, which is a serious public health concern, is increasing rapidly among children, said experts .It is one of main concern of doctor and health experts in all around the world. Prevention of Obesity at a young age is important and crucial .

World Obesity Day is observed globally on March 4 every year. This year’s World Obesity Day Theme was ‘Every Body Needs Everybody’. Indians are more prone to lifestyle diseases. India stands 2nd after China in terms of of obesity rate.

With the increase in Covid cases government all around the world has imposed and taken many measure Doctors say they are seeing normal-weight children. Become overweight or even obese, overweight children become obese. And obese children add more weight. Doctors also report increases in weight-related health conditions. Such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and fatty liver disease. And some children with prediabetes are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

The change in normal lifestyle increases consumption of junk. And no exercise or physical activities has drastically change the lifestyle of normal kids and adults.

The increasing obesity rate all around the world is alarming and people must take this seriously and start living a healthy and better lifestyle. There are many online yoga classes, workout videos that people can join. Children must be also protected and should exercise regularly.

Fatty Foods with higher amounts of fats should be avoided like Junk food. Burger, Pizza , Cold Drinks and Fries, no matter how tempting it is. Instead, healthy foods like green veggies, fruits, good protein-rich diet should be followed.  Monitoring the weight regularly of children and adults at home can also help.


Eating a well-balanced diet consisting of everything carbs , protein, and  some amount of healthy food as well. Changing eating habits as a family encourages children to experience healthy eating habits.

Adults with excess weight and children who are overweight are even at great risk than everyone else . The outcomes can be really dangerous and worse. The Covid situation as obesity leads to the low immune system and Covid 19 attacks our immune systems directly. Obesity leads to a decrease to lung capacity. A study of COVID-19 cases suggests that risks of hospitalization, intensive care unit admission, invasive mechanical ventilation, and death are higher with an increasing BMI of 5.
