Matteo Berrettini was all set to represent Italy at the Tokyo Olympics but due to a thigh injury, he was ruled out. He sustained this injury during Wimbledon and was seen playing wearing some padding during the Wimbledon finals. A potential medal winner and was in good form but had to withdraw as his MRI scan results came on Sunday.
He will be out of action for next 3 weeks and will begin his tour journey with North American hardcourt tennis tournaments. He was disappointed as he has never been a part of the Olympics before and was looking forward to play at Olympics this year. The Olympics tennis tournament will be played on hard courts and he has proved his mettle at hard courts. He could have been seeded 4, has he participated.
Unfortunately, though that he has to miss out and the Olympics committee has also put forward the men’s single seeding on Monday. Novak Djokovic leads the pack with Medvedv, Zverev, Tsitsipas are top 4 seeded players. Novak Djokovic has the best chance of competing and winning the gold medal that has been eluding from his cabinet.
Novak Djokovic has only participated in singles while many others have registered for doubles as well. He will be a force to reckon with and it would be hard to stop him as his game at Hard Court is better than other surfaces. Zverev, Tsitsipas has beaten him on this surface and therefore an upset is not ruled out.
All the players who are participating at the Olympics are fresh and Tsitsipas is the only one who played Hamburg Open before heading to the Olympics. This certainly gives him an edge over the others and among all the players that are participating, none has won an Olympic Gold. Thus, we will have a new winner this time as defending champion Andy Murray has already withdrawn from the Olympics. The matches will begin on 25th July and by 4th August, we will have the winner as well. It would be an exciting contest but Berrettini will be missed as he could have presented a nice challenge and would have also helped Italy have a medal in their tally.
