Flamengo beats Botafogo and shortens the lead of leader Sao Paulo (1-0)

Flamengo beat 1-0 this Saturday in Rio de Janeiro and shortened the advantage of Sao Paulo, which leads the Brazilian Championship.

With a goal from Bruno Henrique, Flamengo remains in third position but equals Atlético Minero in 42 points, two behind leaders Sao Paulo.

Flamengo showed their strength only in the second half as the start was dominated by Botafogo, who had their first chance as soon as the ball rolled with a quick pass from Bruno Nazario to Pedro Raúl with which the midfielder managed to scare Diego Alves.

The reply came in the 14th minute with a pass from Uruguayan Giorgian de Arrascaeta to Bruno Henrique, who narrowly opened the scoring at the Nilton Santos stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

It was only in the second half, and after a pass from Gerson from the middle of the area, that Flamengo scored the first and only goal of the match, with a shot to the corner of the goal taken by Bruno Henrique in the 54th minute.

This was the eighth consecutive game without a win for Botafogo, which remains sunk in the penultimate position with 20 points in the match.

In the classic of the day, Santos and Palmeiras drew 2-2, a result that helped both to advance one position and unseat Internacional, which fell to sixth place.

Palmeiras rose to fourth place, with 38 points, the same as Santos, which is fifth for worse goal difference.

Those led by Portuguese coach Abel Ferreira, who was not on the bench due to being with covid, complicated Santos’ performance on the court at the beginning of the game, but a corner kick from Marinho in the 23rd minute that almost became a goal Olimpico returned the desire to attack the Santista team.

After two attempts by Santos, a direct shot by Marinho and another by Venezuelan Yeferson Soteldo, the scoring was finally opened by Diego Pituca at minute 37.

Palmeiras equalized at the start of the second half with a score by Raphael Veiga and took the lead in the 62nd minute with a goal from William.

The happiness did not last long for Palmeiras because their rival returned to equalize the score after a play set by Soteldo and with which Marinho managed to score the second for Santos, who in this 2020 failed to win in any Paulista classic.
