CashApp Creator Stabbed to Death in San Francisco: Report says

ABC7 News received confirmation from the company that Bob Lee, the creator of CashApp, passed away. Also, he was the current CPO of San Francisco-based cryptocurrency firm MobileCoin. The San Francisco Police Department responded to a complaint of a stabbing along the 300 block of Main Street in SoMa on Tuesday at 2:35 a.m. Despite being brought to a hospital, he passed away from his wounds.

Before taking the position he has now, Lee was the CashApp inventor and CTO of the mobile payments app Square. He had earlier in his career also worked at Google, before joining MobileCoin. To create Square’s Android app, he later joined Square, the payments firm that ultimately changed its name to Block. He founded CashApp and rose to the position of the company’s first CTO.

Lee, sometimes referred to as “Crazy Bob,” invested in computer start-ups. He made investments in companies like SpaceX, Clubhouse, Orchid, Addressable, Nana, Ticket Fairy, Gowalla, Asha, SiPhox, Netswitch, Found, and others, according to his LinkedIn page.

Several online users were shocked by the news. On social media, tributes have been flooding in from other IT executives. The tech community had an outpouring of grief after hearing the news. “It’s true. receiving calls. Heartbreaking. Bob was crucial to the success of Square and Cash App. STL person,” commented Block CEO Jack Dorsey on Nostr.

The San Francisco Police Department has not released any information about the incident or made any arrests.
