Anne With An E Season 4: The Biggest Question That Was Left Incomplete With The Cancellation

The Netflix and CBC adaptation Anne With An E of the classic book Anne of Green Gables began airing in 2017 and featured a remake of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s beloved characters. Compared to the 1985 TV adaptation, the latest version was sometimes too dark for fans, but it went to considerable effort to be more diverse and inclusive.

Sadly, Anne With An E was unable to finish Anne’s story, and the plot points set in season 3 will remain without a conclusion.

Starring the lovely Amybeth McNulty, the show recounted the journey of the curious and optimistic Anne Shirley after she was adopted by Marilla (Geraldine James) and Matthew Cuthbert (RH Thomson).

Between the low audience among adults and the dislike of CBC president Catherine Tait for giving content to Netflix, the partnership between the two companies dissolved and the show lost its financial backing.

Whatever the reasons Anne With An E season 4 was canceled, it doesn’t change the fact that the Netflix series left some important questions unanswered.

Of course, The biggest question left unanswered has to be the future of Anne and Gilbert’s relationship. After three seasons of Anne With An E, the two finally realized their feelings for each other and kissed.

But while it was a long-awaited moment and they became the best couple on the show, it was also just the beginning of their story together. Fans of the 1985 version and the original books know very well that they both have many more adventures, eventually marrying and having children together.

Would Gilbert propose but be rejected like in the books? There was much more to explore between them, but with the show canceled, Anne With An E fans will for now never know if Anne and Gilbert were destined to stay together or if they would eventually part ways.
