According to Science There are Four Possible Benefits to Fasting

We spoke with a dietitian to learn more about the potential benefits of fasting. Which range from improved gut health to weight loss

When it comes to losing weight, the potential benefits of fasting can be very appealing. Because having only a certain window to eat means you may consume fewer calories.

Fasting is defined as consuming no calories for a set period of time. It can be ‘intermittent,’ in which you alternate between eating and fasting. Or prolonged in which you fast for at least two days.

One of the potential benefits of it is that it can activate autophagy, your body’s cellular recycling system. Autophagy, which acts as a sort of quality control for your cells. Allows the body to break down and reuse old cell parts so that they can work more efficiently.

The autophagic process begins after a period of fasting and may be an evolutionary throwback to our hunter-gatherer days. When people would go longer without eating due to the labor-intensive nature of finding food.

According to Fiuza, researchers are investigating the role of autophagy in disease prevention and treatment. “Evidence from a study published in Science Direct(opens in new tab) suggests that fasting can boost autophagy.” Another study, published in Autophagy Journal(opens in new tab).  Discovered that fasting on a regular basis can’reset’ the body and help it run more efficiently by clearing out cellular debris.

The health benefits of fasting

Improves Gut Health-

There is evidence to suggest that a drastic change in diet, such as fasting. It can alter the gut’s microbial make-up and alter what gut bacteria do. Some forms of fasting may benefit the gut microbiome. Which has been linked to a variety of health benefits including improved metabolic health, a lower risk of cancer, heart disease, and obesity.

Healthy Heart and Healthy Blood Sugar Levels-

It may also improve the body’s response to the insulin hormone, which regulates blood sugar levels. When your blood sugars are under control. You are less likely to gain weight and develop diabetes. Both of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease and other heart-related health problems.
