Alexander Zverev has created history by winning the Olympic Gold in his first-ever Olympics. Rafael Nadal did it in 2008 and now it’s Zverev who had to battle hard as he was in the group of death. Luckily all of them were ousted before and he reached the semifinals with ease. It was the toughest match of his career because Djokovic had only lost 3 matches this year and was chasing the Olympic gold. He was determined though as a few days back he and his partner J.
Struff already lost the Men’s doubles and to win a medal for his country was also Zverev’s dream that he was determined to win for his country. On the other hand, Djokovic didn’t drop a single set en route to the semifinals and everyone knows the kind of threat he possesses. Djokovic though looked tired as he was also drafted in Mixed doubles and was playing 2 matches daily for the last 3 days. The match started as expected as Djokovic took the first set with east and it looked like, he won’t stop before he gets the gold.
Zverev made a stunning comeback in the next set as he started giving Djokovic a taste of his own medicine. He won the next set 6-3 and played maximum points from the baseline. His serve speed went up all of a sudden and Djokovic failed to return his serves. Djokovic looked tired and Zverev took full advantage of that by hitting cross-court winners. Djokovic looked like he gave up and won the match 3-6,6-3,6-1. In final, he was up against the mighty Russian, Karen Khachanov.
The match looked like a no-contest because Zverev took the match without any fuss and the scoreline by the end was 6-3, 6-1. With Zverev’s win, Germany came 10th on the medal tally as this was Germany’s 4th gold. Djokovic on the other hand lost his bronze medal match against Pablo Curran Busta and didn’t even compete in mixed doubles bronze medal match. Djokovic even faced backlash for not competing but he told the media that he came to the tournament a little tired and was in the news for all wrong reasons. Almost every athlete in the village wanted to have a selfie with Novak and he never denied anyone.

In one of his Instagram posts, he even said that he has been clicked nearly 5000 times at the Olympic village. Djokovic’s popularity is unquestionable but not having any medal at the Olympics since 2008 must have hurt him the most. He was in tears after his bronze medal match. Sascha on the other end only had nice things to say about Djokovic as he knows his Olympic Gold is the biggest win of his career and that he will be gunning for the US Open as one of the favorites. Djokovic will be leaving for the North American leg and will play one tournament in the build-up to US Open. He still has a chance to complete the calendar slam as he has already won the first three slams of the year.
