In a remarkable display of courage, determination, and collective efforts, the Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue Operation concluded. The 41 people who had been stuck within the Silkyari tunnel in Uttarakhand since November 12 were successfully freed. Rescuers pulled the trapped workers, who endured the harrowing situation for 17 days, out through a 57-meter steel pipe on stretchers fitted with wheels. This challenging rescue mission required the coordination of various agencies. Including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Uttarakhand Police, and the armed forces.

Who rescued the tunnel workers?

The rat miners played a crucial role in the breakthrough. Exceeding expectations by digging the last 12-meter stretch in less than 24 hours. Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain, a member of the National Disaster Management Authority, commended them.

The Border Roads Organization (BRO), which was instrumental in the Himalayan operation, was among the individuals whose tenacity and resolve were on display during the rescue effort. The Uttarakhand government has decided to provide ₹1 lakh in cash aid to each of the workers stuck in the Silkyara tunnel. They will also be provided with medical care until they return home.

National Leaders Praise Resilience

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in praising the courage and patience of the trapped workers, their families, and the bravery of the rescue personnel. In a heartfelt message, the Prime Minister commended the workers’ resilience, stating, “The success of the rescue operation of our laborer brothers in Uttarkashi is making everyone emotional. We are very grateful for the bravery and patience these families have displayed during this difficult period.”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also expressed gratitude for the successful evacuation. Praising the determination of the trapped individuals who endured adversity without giving up hope. He emphasized the government’s commitment to leaving no stone unturned to protect its citizens.

Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the efforts of various organizations involved in the rescue operation. Expressing happiness over the safe rescue of all the workers, Singh credited the success to the contributions of agencies such as the NDRF, SDRF, Uttarakhand Police, and the armed forces, acknowledging their significant role in challenging conditions.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami provided assurance that none of the rescued laborers was in critical condition. He added that the workers, who crawled out of the passage themselves, would undergo medical observation before being sent home.

The nation’s celebration of the successful completion of the Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue Operation is evidence of the people’s unwavering spirit and the potency of well-coordinated rescue efforts in the face of difficulty.
