The Queen’s Gambit season 2: Everything You Need To Know, Including New Cast And Confirm Release Date

Anya Taylor-Joy has shown that there haven’t been any talks over another season of The Queen’s Gambit.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight after her Golden Globes win for best actress in a limited series, Taylor-Joy was asked if she would be open to reprising her role as aggressive chess player Beth Harmon.

“Maybe,” Taylor-Joy said when asked about the prospect. “Not to disappoint anybody, but we simply never thought about it. It was always a sapling to shrub transition. You see her grow, you leave her in a good location. So we were really surprised when people were like,’ Where’s season 2?'”

Despite affirming that a follow-up to the award-winning Netflix series was not on the desk, Taylor-Joy confessed that she would consider a return if showrunners Scott Frank and Allan Scott asked her to.

“That being said,” Taylor-Joy added, “I adore the entire team that made it, and I’d jump at the chance to work with them again.”

Why The Queen’s Gambit season 2 makes little sense

It is highly unlikely we’ll see more of this series on Netflix. As Taylor-Joy explained, The Queen’s Gambit is a self-indulgent story that finishes Beth’s arc as a character, so there isn’t any real reason behind the Netflix property to become a franchise like Stranger Things or The Crown.

That’s not to say that the Queen’s Gambit lacked the recognition to become a continuous series, nevertheless. According to a report by Variety, the play hauled in 62 million viewers inside its first month. Netflix’s characters are almost always skewed, admittedly, given that the streamer’s seeing figures are based on those who have watched at least 2 minutes of an event, documentary, or movie.

Still, obviously, The Queen’s Gambit was a smash hit — both in its number of viewers and cultural effects. We positioned it number two at our very best TV shows of 2020 list.
