South African Celebrity Sharlto Copley is the latest name to join the cast of Season 2 of Russian Doll, the acclaimed Netflix series from Natasha Lyonne. Other cast members who have already been declared include Schitt’s Creek’s Annie Murphy and Carolyn Michelle Smith. Netflix is doing a Marvel and keeping the storyline and character details under wraps, and we still have basically no new information about the second season beyond its own casting announcements.
Russian Doll’s very first time surfaced in February 2019 and has been extremely well received by audiences and critics. Netflix quickly renewed the series for a second season in June of 2019. Nonetheless, it seems that just in 2021 has fresh information has been published about the second season, even if it’s only cast members. The first season followed author, producer, and creator Lyonne as a woman stuck in a time loop, doomed to repeat the exact same exasperating birthday party over and over again when she expires. She finds that another guy, Alan Zaveri, is experiencing the identical time loop phenomenon as she.
If I were to guess, I’d bet that the next season follows a similar time loop premise, but using a different plotline and characters. The genius of Russian Doll’s success was its writing and how it deftly shifted between humor and drama a la Groundhog Day, in addition to its own fresh, new spin on a genre narrowed by tropes and conventions. While Lyonne’s Nadia was an interesting and engaging personality, I do not really need another season of her, and I am interested to see that Murphy and Copley will perform in the new season.
There’s not any release date yet for Russian Doll’s second season but will drop later this season. The first season is currently available on Netflix.
