While campaigning in Gujarat today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took some time to remember veteran Uttar Pradesh politician Mulayam Singh Yadav. Who died on 10th of morning at the age of 82.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, had been receiving treatment at Medanta Hospital since August 22. He was transferred to the ICU on October 2.

He had been in critical condition since then and was being treated in the ICU by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. He was an astute politician, blazed a new path by putting backward castes at the centre of Uttar Pradesh politics. He served as Chief Minister three times (1989-91, 1993-95, and 2003-2007). Akhilesh and Prateek, his two sons, survive him.
Yadav, a staunch supporter of secular politics, suffered electoral losses after ordering the firing on the Kar Sevaks. During the peak of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in 1990. But he positioned himself as the saviour of the Constitution and returned to rule the State. By forging a strong Muslim-Yadav alliance that paid rich dividends on the campaign trail.
He also held the Defence portfolio during the United Front government in 1996. After coming dangerously close to becoming Prime Minister. At a time when coalition politics were the norm and regional parties wanted to be more than just kingmakers.
