The 2024 Met Gala, held on May 6th, has officially ended. There was a lot of yelling inside the tent for this flashy event, led by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, which raises millions of dollars each year for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. But it was largely for Zendaya, a co-chair of the night alongside Bad Bunny, who donned black headgear like an old-timey hot-water bottle; Jennifer Lopez in head-to-toe silver crystals; and Chris Hemsworth, who had joked about showing up in sweats but instead wore a plain cream suit. “Tom Ford sweatpants,” he said.
What was the theme of the event?
Change, decay, and the passage of time were all weaved into how celebrities interpreted this year’s enigmatic subject, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” What? Yeah, you have us, too. The Costume Institute exhibition, which opened to the press the morning before the gala, includes magnificent garments so old and fragile that they must be presented lying flat, as well as an Odorama twist in which you can smell the molecules of really musty old clothes. It’s not altogether comfortable.
Bad Bunny and Jennifer Lopez co-chaired the event on May 6 at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, which also included Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth, and, as always, Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. All five co-chairs stepped onto the carpet as it opened, donning jaw-dropping colors and textures to represent the “Garden of Time” dress code. The quirky clothing code is based on the same-titled short tale by J.G. Ballard, published in 1962.
What happens during the Met Gala?
In short, it’s a secret. As a result, guests must comply with the no-phone (and thus no social media) policy. However, you can view unique photographs from inside the 2024 Met Gala, including table arrangements, cuisine, and decor. The event typically features a high-profile performer. Guests always visit the exhibition before sitting down to supper.
