Kangana Ranaut has swayed the audience again with her strong performance in Thalaivii. It is a biopic on J Jayalalitha the six time of Tamil Nadu. Thalaivii depicts the life journey of J Jayalalitha from films to politics.
There is huge respect from actors turned politicians in South India as there favorite stars. Now will lead them and help them solve their issues. In the movie AL Vijay’s Thalaivii- Arvind Swami who portrays Maruthur Gopala. Ramachandran popularly known as M.G.R. tells J Jayalalitha played by Kangana Ranaut. He says “Agar tum janta ko pyaar dogi, toh wo bhi pyaar dega,”. This became one of the catchy dialogue in the film.
Kangana very well portrays the role of J Jayalalitha. Although the movie has political scenes but it is not a political film but rather romantic film.
Even in her own personal life she is surrounded by politics over the past few years. Because of strong grasp of politics some of her fans have unfollowed her. Despite all this there are millions who support her and love her work. She blazed an audacious trail from films to politics collecting brickbats to return in her own time.
With this movie Kangana has shut down all her haters and impressed critics and fans. The beautiful teenager, a woman who is in love, a haughty film star and undefeated politician. Kangana very well portrayed all the shades of Jayalalitha.
The movie shows us the journey of rumoured relationship between Jayalalitha and MGR. Jayalalithaa was “Ammu” for MGR. She hoped to live with the matinee idol who was already married and 31 years older than her. The duo was so much loved between 1966 and 1970 they had acted in more than 40 movies together of which around 28 films were blockbusters.
The film is set in the 60s where MGR was already a well settle superstar and Jayalalitha was an upcoming star. These era shows how politics created a dispute between Jaya and MGR. But they were in love and love can conquer anything. Years later, MGR and Jaya joined forces as politicians All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
Although the climax is somewhat predictable. But the director AL Vijay makes it interesting with different layers in the movie. The film very well portrays the bare truth of the film and in many instance the unspoken love to. The director capture all this small moments very beautifully. The movie is balanced with perfect layers of drama and emotions . And wonderful screenplay written by K. V. Vijayendra Prasad, Madhan Karky (Tamil) and Rajat Arora (Hindi), we are continually anxious to know what happened next. The makers have been consistent with the timeline and haven’t tried to over dramatize any of the incidents.
Just like any drama the movie is slow paced at times. But after second half the film picks up its phase again and keeps getting better. In the second half we see Jayalalitha transformation from an actress to politician.
What is wonderful about this movie is that the actors did a great role. Kangana doesn’t try to speak in Tamil accent while portraying Jayalalitha’s character. With bare minimum make up she very well delivered the performance and did justice to Jayalalitha’s character.
Swami gets under the skin of the role and makes MGR his own, and from the pause, he takes between his lines, to the twitch of his face and many other little nuances, he is so convincing, that there’s absolutely no way MGR could’ve been any different in real life. A special mention to Raj Arun, who we remember as the cruel father from Secret Superstar, portrays the role of producer turned politician R. M. Veerappan. He stands tall against Ranaut’s character and delivers a winning performance. Veteran south actor Nassar as Tamil Nadu’s former chief minister M. Karunanidhi is excellent.
Beside all ups and downs the movie is a well balanced biography with tints of drama and is a must watch movie.
