Is Supergirl Season 6 The Final Season?

Supergirl’s season 6 premiere synopsis teases the start of the show’s final run. Supergirl has been around the air since 2015 and a vital part of the Arrowverse because it moved to The CW with season 2. After the massive Crisis on Infinite Earth’s occasion, the franchise is going through a transition period. The new series Superman & Lois premiered in February, also Batwoman is breaking in a new series lead. Meanwhile, flagship reveals Arrow ended in January 2020, making The Flash that the Arrowverse’s most senior series. Black Mirror and Supergirl are on their way out as well, with both sets to finish this season.

Supergirl Season 6 premieres on March 30 after nearly a year off the air. Season 5 ended one incident early as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The makeshift finale saw Kara and her staff work to draw individuals from the harmful VR world which played a major part in season 5. The episode also featured a long-awaited reconciliation for Kara and Lena, who have been on the outs because Lena found Kara kept her superhero identity from her. The finale ended on a cliffhanger, with Brainy near death after shooting on Lex.

The season 6 premiere synopsis, released by The CW, shows Brainy does survive the encounter. The episode, titled”Rebirth,” also includes”an epic battle” with Supergirl and friends taking on Gamenmae and Lex. The Entire premiere synopsis reads:

As Brainiac (Jesse Rath) lays near death after attempting to stop Lex (Jon Cryer), Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and staff soar in to save him, engaging in an epic conflict with Gamenmae (guest star Cara Buono). After beating Leviathan, Supergirl turns her focus to Lex (Jon Cryer) who has used the Obsidian platform to brainwash half the world to adore him and accompany him at all costs, no matter what horrible things he can. Understanding how harmful this makes her brother, Lena (Katie McGrath) enlists the whole group – Alex (Chyler Leigh), J’onn (David Harewood), Dreamer (Nicole Maines), Kelly (Azie Tesfai) and Brainiac – to assist, but Supergirl realizes the only way to truly prevent Lex is to sacrifice herself.

As the description suggests with its action-packed details, the season 6 premiere will essentially be the season 5 finale. Most storylines were left up in the air, so those need to be solved before new arcs can begin, presumably in episode 2. The Flash has faced a similar question: it finished last season 3 episodes early and is still in the middle of beating that year’s villain. Supergirl has an advantage in that the premiere might feel a little odd, but another episode can immediately begin on fresh storylines, which won’t have an effect on season 6’s pacing.

This is especially essential for Supergirl, because this season will also be it’s last. It would be unsatisfactory if the series had to spend too much of its farewell run ending up storylines from almost a year ago. Rather, Supergirl will have the ability to focus on crafting a satisfying goodbye to its characters and audiences. Thankfully, it will be a while until the show finale; after broadcasting the first part of season 6, Supergirl will go on hiatus in May and return to finish its conduct this summer.
