Indira Gandhi was an Indian Politician. She served her father as an unofficial personal assistant during his tenure. In the late 1950s she served as the president of Indian National Congress. She was also appointed as the member of parliament in 1964. Indira Gandhi also served as the Prime Minister of India from 1966 to March 1977.

Her full name is Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi, née Nehru. She was born in November 19,1917, Allahabad India. Also she was the first female Prime Minister. She was the president for 3 consecutive years. Indira was the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru. He was also one of the chief figures in getting independence from British. And also was the top and powerful leader of the party Indian National Congress and was the first Prime Minister. Her grandfather was Motilal Nehru who was also an important figure in getting India freedom.

Political Career

Her career as the first female Prime Minister was not easy. Shastri’s sudden death in January 1966. As a result of which she was named leader of the Congress Party. And than eventually became prime minister. In a compromise between the party’s right and left wings. However she had to face a lot of challenges from right wing of the party. The right wing was leader was former financial Minister Moraji Desai. Later in 1967 elections she won a seat at the Lok Sabha but the Congress Party didn’t manage to win majority of seats, and Gandhi had to accept Desai as deputy prime minister.

There was a growing tension between the party and later in 1969 she was expelled from the party by Desai and other members. But Indira was joined by a majority of party members. They form a small group and named it as “New” Congress Party. They won a sweeping victory against the consecutive parties.

Lesser Known Facts

  • At the tender age of 12 she joined politics and form an innovative way to join the INC (Indian National Congress). She formed a group a group called “Monkey  Brigade” along with her friends.
  • She was annoyed due to her ill-health and was being treated in Switzerland in the 1940s.
  • After her father’s death ,she took charge as the Prime Minister of India, thus becoming the first women Prime Minister of the country.
  • Under her leadership Green Revolution began in India in 1960s, where the country enjoyed a growth in agricultural yields.

The Iron Lady came to an tragic end in October 1984 when two of her bodyguards named Satwant Singh and Beant Singh Assassinated her  while she wasw on her way to interviewed by a British Actor Peter Ustinov.
