His Dark Materials has yet to debut its second season, but the team behind the epic fantasy adventure series is already hard at work on season 3. Executive producer Joel Collins teased that His Dark Materials season 3 is already in the works, And since it adapts the most ambitious and luxurious book in the Philip Pullman trilogy, they will need as much time as they can.
HBO and the BBC have yet to give the green light to the third season of His Dark Materials, but the team behind the fantasy adventure series is already getting to work on it. In an interview with Radio Times, Collins teased that the team went to work “trying to solve the puzzle” of season 3 of His Dark Materials, which adapts the events of The Amber Spyglass, the third book in the acclaimed trilogy. Pullman’s fantasy:
“The world of the third season is extremely strange and complicated. The complexity intensifies in terms of the story, the images, and the narrative. There are very few of us who are part of a very secret group doing the first jobs, which is exciting and complex. We are trying to solve the puzzle away from all eyes and noise. And it’s that precious time that you get before hundreds of people start asking questions. “
The Amber Spyglass will probably be the hardest book for the writer-led team to adapt. Jack Thorne and executive producer Jane Tranter. Not only is it the most ambitious and will require expensive production design to create the new worlds (including Lyra and Will’s descent into hell), but it is probably the least cinematic. There are long sections of the book dedicated to a character who comes to know a world completely populated by non-humanoid creatures called Mulefa, who do not speak verbally. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to translate it to screen, which Collins acknowledges.
“Everything is complicated, but I have an absolute idea of the Mulefa and what their world is, Asriel’s Republic is an incredible place,” said Collins. “Obviously we are going to the land of the dead, and how exciting to think and tour. It is a huge, complicated and brilliantly fun puzzle. ”
The series so far has set its sights on this epic climax to the series, which involves a world-shattering celestial war, most of which occurs entirely off-screen in Pullman’s book, which is primarily devoted to the story of Lyra and Will. But the show so far has been taking steps to make the story as epic and great as possible, sometimes to the detriment of the little character moments that made the books so engaging. I can’t say he relies on Thorne to pull it off, but since this last epic half of the story has been his focus from the start, I can only hope he succeeds.
His Dark Materials season 2 will debut on the BBC on November 8, followed by a US debut on HBO and HBO Max on November 16, 2020.
