Sarojini Naidu also known by Sarojini Chattopadhyaya. She was a famous Indian poet and freedom fighter. She was the the first Indian women to be appointed as the president of the Indian National Congress and the governor of any state in India. She was also known as “The Nightingale of India”. As a studious child, Naidu wrote the play “Maher Muneer”, which earned her a scholarship to study abroad. She wrote many beautiful poems and her collection of poems helped her earned literary acclaim. In 1905, she published her first book, a collection of poems, under the title of “Golden Threshold”. Sarojini was also the one who inspired Indian Renaissance movement. With the mission of improving the life of women I’m India.
She was born on February 13, 1879 in Hyderabad. She was from a well to do family her father was a Doctor, scientist and philosopher, and educator. He was the one who founded the Nizam College in Hyderabad. Her mother was a poetess and wrote many Bengali poem. Dr Aghore Chattopadhyaya her father was the first member of INC ( Indian National Congress) in Hyderabad. Virendranath Chattopadhyaya, Sarojini’s brother, was a political activist who played a key role in establishing the Berlin Committee . He was allegedly killed by Russian Troops in 1937. Her second brother Harindranath Chattopadhyaya was a poet and playwright.
She was also brilliant as a student and got many appreciation. In addition she was appreciated when Sarojini was selected in Madras University at the age of 12. Later in 1985 she also went to London to continue with her studies. Sarojini studied at King’s College in London and later at Girton College, Cambridge University. She developed a keen interest in reading and writing poems when she was in College. While she was in college she became proficient in many languages including Urdu, English, Persian, Telugu and Bengali.
When she was in College she met Dr. Muthyala Govindarajulu Naidu and both of them grew closer. And after finishing her college at the age of 19 she got married to him .

Beside her role in the Indian Nationalist Movement she also contributed a lot in literary field. Many of her beautiful poems were later transformed into songs. Her inspiration came from nature and everyday surroundings. . In 1905, her collection of poems was published under the title “Golden Threshold”. Later, she also published two other collections known as the “The Bird of Time”, and “The Broken Wings“. Both the the collection attracted a huge number of reader. Apart from poetry she also wrote essays like ‘ Words of Freedom’.
