It is coming up on nearly a year since we last had a new season of Derry Girls and even though watching the show on repeat truly never gets old, we’re quite keen to get a new series of the award-winning comedy show. Well, the fantastic thing is that a third-season has not only been confirmed however is much on its way. Here’s what we know.
The Release Date Of Derry Girls Season 3
Filming for string 3 was expected to start around June 2020, but was put off at the time and has continued to be put off since, so as of yet we don’t have an official release date. Fingers crossed for 2021.
What do we know about Derry Girls Season 3?
Like most much-loved show, filming for Derry Girls season 3 has been delayed last year amid the coronavirus pandemic, which is exactly why we’ve had such a massive gap between seasons. Previously there were just three months between series 1 and 2.
The fantastic news is the Derry Girls’ very own Nicola Coughlan (who has recently been occupied with a little project called Bridgerton) hasn’t only confirmed that string 3 is in the pipeline, but also that the project is moving together with scripts and storylines that were already written – and is going to be the best yet.

“Can affirm Series 3 of Derry Girls is filming this season and I can name bloody wait,” she stated on Twitter. “Covid has pushed filming several times which has been shite, but frankly the storylines in this show would be the best we’ve ever done so I can’t tell you how worth it the wait will have been.”
Speaking to her.ie Coughlan also said, “We can not do anything between a crowd right now, therefore logistically, it’s tough. But I spoke to [show creator] Lisa McGee lately and she talked me through the storylines. They’re so brilliant, she added. “Which doesn’t surprise me she’s just amazing – but it made me want to do it right now.”
Who has been cast in Derry Girls Season 3?
The main cast is expected to remain the same, with Saoirse-Monica Jackson coming to play with Erin Quinn, Nicola Coughlan as Clare Devlin, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell as Michelle Mallon, Louisa Harland as Orla McCool, and Dylan Llewellyn as James Maguire, alongside the characters’ Relatives and supporting cast.
Meanwhile, show creator Lisa McGee told Radio Times through a meeting in 2020 which she would like to cast comedian Dara O Briain to play a role in the next show.
