The light-hearted British sitcom Derry Girls which is based in the 1990s and narrates the story of a group of Irish teens has won people’s hearts and the viewers want another season of the teen comedy. The coming-of-age sitcom is created and written by Lisa McGee and produced by Hat Trick Productions. It was broadcast on January and February 2018 on Channel 4 and become the most successful comedy series on the channel after Father Ted. All episodes of Derry Girls are available to stream in India exclusively on Netflix.
The show features Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Erin Quinn, Louisa Harland as Orla McCool, Nicola Coughlan as Clare Devlin, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell as Michelle Mallon, Dylan Llewellyn as James Maguire, Tara Lynne O’Neill as Ma/Mary, Kathy Kiera Clarke as Aunt Sarah, Siobhán McSweeney as Sister Michael, and Tommy Tiernan as Da/Gerry.
In the 1990s in Derry, Erin her cousin Orla friends Clare and Michelle and her English cousin James are steering their way through their teenage years and attending an all-girls catholic school, during the end of The Troubles i,e. an ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland in the late twenties.
The story navigates fun times the four of them have, like a forthcoming Paris trip, to learning French, cramming for a big exam, welcoming the “children of Chernobyl “during the disaster, to Erin becoming editor of her school’s magazine.
The show also explores the political situation of the late 20s in Ireland and the tuff between Protestants and Catholic school children which was supposed to be a peace initiative. The girls (and boy) also comically create an uproar at a family wedding in which their parents have to intervene and handle the situation. In the final episode of season 2, Derry is all preparing for Christmas and excited for President Bill Clinton’s visit.
As for the plot for season3, it has not been announced yet by the makers of the show.
For the release date, there are good news and bad news. The good news is that a third season was commissioned for 2020. But the bad news is that it was postponed due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
As they say, it’s always good to be positive, the show is going to hit the floor in mid-2021.
