Prime Minister Narendra Modi, renowned for his proactive approach during times of crisis, chaired a high-level meeting on Monday to assess the government’s readiness for Cyclone Biparjoy. Coastal areas could be at risk from the cyclone, which has grown into a very severe cyclonic storm over the east-central Arabian Sea. The prime minister received a thorough update on the cyclone’s current state. The government has set up the precautions to be taken during the meeting.
The very severe cyclonic storm, Cyclone Biparjoy, subsided on Tuesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The cyclone is currently moving northwards at a speed of five kilometers per hour. Its current location is approximately 290 km southwest of Porbandar in Gujarat. The IMD predicts that the cyclone will cross the Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat, as well as the adjacent coasts of Pakistan, on Thursday.
The IMD has issued a red alert for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in anticipation of Cyclone Biparjoy’s landfall in Gujarat. This alert signifies the need for heightened preparedness and precautionary measures in the affected areas.
It is important to note that Cyclone Biparjoy has displayed a remarkable degree of intensity. Surpassing any sustained strength seen in Arabian Sea cyclones since the debut of satellite data in 1982. The cyclone has been strong for 126 hours and is predicted to break further records. According to information from the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC), the cyclone has already experienced two periods of acceleration. The first one took place on June 6 and 7, when the wind surged from 55 kph to 139 kph. Between June 9 and 10, there was a second acceleration, during which the wind speed increased from 120 kmph to 195 kmph. The cyclone’s change from a depression on June 6 to a severe cyclonic storm on June 10 was the result of this tremendous strengthening.
In light of the anticipated impact of the Cyclone, Western Railways has taken precautionary measures. By canceling 67 trains that pass through the regions likely to be affected by adverse weather conditions. Passengers affected by these cancellations will be eligible for refunds in accordance with the existing rules. The zonal office of Indian Railways has also emphasized that various safety and security precautions are being implemented for train passengers in these vulnerable areas.
As the situation develops, it is crucial for residents and authorities in the affected regions to remain vigilant. Also, they should adhere to the instructions and guidelines provided by the relevant authorities. By prioritizing safety and taking necessary precautions, it is possible to mitigate the potential risks associated with Cyclone Biparjoy.
