Would you feel it has been over 11 years since Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 finished?
This popular Japanese arcade, also known as KōdoGiasu: Hangyaku no Rurūshu, is beloved by fans all around the globe.
This year’s release Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection grossed over $8 million worldwide, which makes it among the very successful Japanese anime movies of this year.
Together with the show still being so popular within a decade on, why on earth have we still not seen Code Geass Season 3?
Before we answer that question, let us take a look at the story so far.
Code Geass is one of those rare anime show that wasn’t adapted from a manga series. It is the first series that has been composed by Ichirō Ōkouchi and directed by Gorō Taniguchi.
The series is set in another world and tells the story of prince Lelouch vi of Brittania.
In this world, the Holy Empire of Brittania has come to be the dominant nation in the world. The empire is now seeking to expand its influence into Japan from conquest.
The story begins as Brittania invades part of Japan known as Area 11
Lelouch Lampeouge is the son of Emperor Charles Zi of Britannia. He’s dropped out of favor with his father after his mother and sister had been murdered. Rather than hunting down the killer, his father chooses only to go about life as normal.
Lelouch Lampeouge becomes outraged by his father’s actions and blames him for not obtaining justice for his deceased sister and mother.
After he’s sent by his father to Japan to lull its leaders into a false sense of security regarding the impending invasion.
Regardless of doing their best to resist the invasion, Japan loses the war and becomes yet another component of the empire of Brittania.
Lelouch Lampeouge joins the Japanese cause and vows to one day defeat his father’s empire. This is where the real story begins.
The first series was released on October 6, 2006. Another season immediately followed on April 6, 2007. Both seasons one and two comprised 25 episodes.
Much to the dismay of fans everywhere, a third show remains yet to materialize.
The studio behind Code Geass, Sunrise, disclosed last year that there was a film version of the hit anime series.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection premiered in Japan on February 9, 2019.
Fans flock to movie theaters in enormous numbers, something that ensured the movie was a financial hit. The film also received a limited release in both Canada and the USA, where it performed well.
In case you missed it at the movie theaters, then the great news is that the studio lately announced the Blu-Ray/DVD version will be released in Japan on December 5th of the year.
All of you die-hard fans of the series will recognize the value of that date since it is the birthday of Lelouch Lamperouge.
The DVD is expected to come with a bonus disc that will include a visual opinion by Jun Fukuyama, Takahiro Sakurai, and Goro Taniguchi.
It will also have footage out of screenings, a special booklet, postcards, an original illustration collection, along a distinctive picture drama.
Fans around Japan will probably be queuing round the block to get their hands on these exciting collectibles. While the information for lovers in North America and Europe is still not available, it appears almost certain that multi-language versions which have English, will be available shortly after.
The moment we hear anything, we’ll let you know.
So, how much enthusiasm still revolves around the series, even 10 years on, the question is, when will Sunrise release period 3 of Code Geass?
Fans of Japanese arcades will probably be all too familiar with the latest fashion in the industry.
Sunrise has joined the legions of studios that appeared to have turned their back on creating a new string’ of hit TV anime shows in favor of making more lucrative movie versions.
While pictures do please the fans, they are not the equivalent of a full-length series. There’s just so much footage or content a two-hour film can display, and it generally isn’t sufficient to fill the emptiness of an entire season’s worth of plot and events.
Given that there’s been a range of hit film adaptations within the previous 5 years or so, regrettably, it seems that this new formula is here to remain.
However, what isn’t clear is if the studios will go back to the first TV shows when they’ve made the film version or not.
The good thing is that the $8 million made by the film will have provided the money to make the 3rd series. Most of all, it will also have revealed to the studio that there’s still plenty of need for a third year.
Whether Sunrise decides to invest heavily in a new series remains to be seen.
The fans have demonstrated their interest and support at the 3rd collection of Code Geass. Now we should all wait to see if the studio is still listening. We wouldn’t advise fans of Code Geass to hold their breath for very long though as all hope for a third season is mostly based on rumor and speculation.
As usual, as soon as we hear some solid information in an official source, make sure that social media announcements, trailers, or any other sorts of details, we will allow you to know.
