ChromeOS overtook MacOS

Chrome OS having a fantastic year even overtaking macOS in terms of market share. chrome os having an absolute gangbuster year chrome os computers outsold max for the first time ever in 2020 and really started to eat into windows market share by almost tripling their own market share from the first quarter to the fourth quarter.

According to IDC on average for 2020 Chrome OS came in at 10 percent of all computer sales but for the fourth quarter that actually climbed up to fourteen point four percent almost double of the seven point seven percent share. MacOS got and bringing windows below eighty percent for the first time in decades and while this is huge news.

I would just like to point out two little things before we move on one these market share numbers are of course only for new sales and in reality, people use their computers for I don’t know five-ten years so probably in the wild there are way more people still using mac os and windows of course and two chrome os devices of course typically sell in the entry-level categories whereas the expensive machines for creative work or gaming, for example, those are likely still primarily windows and mac os but still chrome os seems to have benefited the most from the massive shift to everyone.

Working and studying from home likely because chrome os devices are extremely easy for the overworked staff at schools and companies to deploy and manage remotely Microsoft and apple are of course both aware of the massive shift which is likely why Microsoft is going all out on making its upcoming windows 10x operating system a direct chromos competitor rather than an os for dual-screen pcs like it originally intended and it is likely also why Apple is pushing hard to turn iPad os into a platform designed to challenge traditional pcs.
