Fans of young-adult fantasy are in for a delightful and imaginative escapade in The Lost Son (Second Edition) by Aidan Lucid, a spellbinding novel recently honored with the July 2023 Silver Literary Titan Book Award. With its captivating narrative, vivid world-building, and themes of perseverance and friendship, this book promises a reading experience that resonates with audiences of all ages.
The story revolves around Henry Simmons, a seemingly ordinary high-school student whose life transforms when he stumbles upon a mysterious golden coin. What starts as a harmless discovery soon catapults him, his prom date Tracey, and three unlikely companions to the realm of Zargothia—a world fraught with hidden magic, lurking darkness, and creatures that serve the malevolent King Zakarius.
In addition to Henry and Tracey, the group is joined by two British-American WWII pilots who find themselves similarly displaced in time, as well as a talking cat named Jasper, whose droll insights offer moments of comic relief. The companions embark on a quest to save the Zargothians, forging a friendship that forms the emotional core of the novel. Each character brings something unique to the table, showcasing how unity and empathy can conquer even the darkest of times.
Despite being declared the “Chosen One,” Henry remains remarkably relatable, grappling with self-doubt, fear, and the daunting weight of expectations. Lucid deftly explores the complexity of leadership through Henry’s eyes, examining the struggle between destiny and free will as he fights to protect those around him. Meanwhile, the banter and camaraderie amongst Henry, Tracey, Hannorah, Daniel, and their newfound allies provide charming interludes, balancing the tense action sequences and enhancing the novel’s immersive quality.
The July 2023 Silver Literary Titan Book Award marks a significant milestone for Lucid, underscoring the book’s literary merit. Through masterful storytelling and a well-paced plot, the author seamlessly interweaves fantasy, time travel, and history, painting a timeless narrative that both challenges and entertains readers.
