American Gods wrapped up its third season over the weekend using a big old cliffhanger: Mr. Wednesday was dead, and as a God, convention dictates he has a vigil, which in this case entails Shadow being wrapped up in the vines of the World Tree, Yggdrasil.
Nonetheless, it turns out, it’s been a hint.
Shadow is killed by the ritual and, in a vision, Wednesday shows that the sacrifice of his own son is the best way to restore him with all of his Odin powers.
Evidently, Shadow’s death won’t be permanent, however, the fact he has been betrayed by his currently super-powerful dad, and all the other plotlines between various personalities, are pointing to an all-out war in season 4.
However, the thing is, season 4 has not ever been greenlit yet.
Gaiman says that the season 3 finale is really where a lot of items that have been set up since now 1″ come in and soil”, but a thing that’s still being set up for a”big show” in season 4 is Mr. World, and the various identities he’s taken on.
Season 4 will unquestionably be climactic when it happens since it will wrap up the book, but Gaiman admitted”it is open-ended, in that with each of the showrunners, I’ve had to sit down and say, ‘okay, this really is the plot of the next American Gods book, which I haven’t yet written, but you need to understand this”.
