The eighth and final season of The CW’s supernatural teen drama wrapped four years before, but will fan get to watch The Vampire Diaries season 9? Based on the best-selling novel series by L.J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries was developed for the small screen by Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson with his long-time collaborator Julie Plec and premiered on The CW in 2009. Set in the scenic, but paranormal city of Mystic Falls, the long-running series concentrated on the vampire love triangle between protagonists Elena (Nina Dobrev), Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), and his brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder), along with the town’s other human and not-so-human inhabitants.
The Vampire Diaries spawned not one, but two spinoffs The Originals and Legacies, and developed a loyal fan following more than its eight seasons on the air. The show enjoyed a good run and its own season 8 finale wrapped up most of its unresolved storylines well in an epic episode that featured some significant character deaths and a couple of happy endings.
Despite its own satisfying finale lovers of this show still hope the second season might be on the cards, but could The Vampire Diaries season 9 actually happen?
The CW Canceled The Vampire Diaries In 2017
Just a few months after The CW renewed the series for its eighth season, showrunner Julie Plec declared The Vampire Diaries would end with season 8, feeling the series had come to a natural end. Fans might have been disappointed afterward, but the knowledge that season 8 is the show’s last allowed its makers to craft the last season that tied up loose ends and bid a proper farewell to its personalities.

The Vampire Diaries Season 9 Isn’t Likely
Star Ian Somerhalder has stated several times he feels The Vampire Diaries chapter of his career is closed and seeing as Nina Dobrev abandoned the series in season 6 and just returned for the finale, it doesn’t seem likely she would be interested in filming a ninth season. More lately, Somerhalder appeared on Andy Cohen Live and seemed to put the rumors to rest seeing his or her Dobrev’s return for a season 9. In his words: “I haven’t heard anything about a season nine I mean, for example, what would happen? Stefan and Damon Damon have, such as gray hair and they’ve canes? Listen, it ran a great route and now it’s still living. That’s what is so amazing. It is still living.”
That sounds like the nail in the coffin on an expected ninth season, but Somerhalder is right, The Vampire Diaries does reside on through spinoffs. What’s more, Kevin Williamson has moved on to new items with all the CBS anthology thriller series Tell Me A Story, while showrunner Julie Plec is currently focusing on Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies and Roswell, New Mexico. With that in mind, it does not seem like another season would fit into anybody’s schedules.
The Vampire Diaries Has Ended But There Is Still Legacies
The Vampire Diaries may be over and its first spinoff The Originals has sadly followed suit. But, fellow spinoff Legacies is still in the atmosphere and packaged with sufficient Vampire Diaries Easter eggs to fill the vampire-shaped hole in almost any enthusiast’s life. The series is still flourishing and, while there were several delays on account of the coronavirus pandemic, Legacies season 3 premieres on February 25, 2021, on The CW. For fans thirsting for more vampire tales, there is great news since Legacies has already been renewed for a fourth season, set to air throughout the 2021-2022 TV season.
